Award-winning choir, the Mornington Singers and conductor Orla Flanagan present:
Cantemus (with guest conductor Patrick O'Shea)
Saturday 21st of June at 8pm at St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway. Tickets €12/€8 available: morningtonsingers.eventbrite.ie or at the door.
We'll also be performing the same programme as part of the Pipeworks International Organ Festival in the Pro Cathedral, Dublin on 19th of June at 7.30pm. See the festival website for ticket information: www.pipeworksfestival.com.
The programme for this concert will include all the competition pieces we performed at the Cork International Choral Festival 2014, at which we were awarded "Ireland's Choir of the Year", and at the Florilège Vocal de Tours 2014 international grand prix choral festival, at which we were awarded 3rd prize in the Renaissance Competition.
A rich and varied programme, of contrasting eras and styles, it includes works by Byrd, Schütz, Lassus, Monteverdi, Schumann, Fauré, Vaughan Williams, Martin, Orban, as well as contemporary Irish composers Rhona Clarke, Seán Doherty and Éna Brennan.
We will also be delighted to be performing "Cantemus", a new work written for the Mornington Singers by American composer Patrick O'Shea, who will be conducting us for this piece.
Ireland's Choir of the Year (and the Victor Leeson Perpetual Trophy)
3rd Prize in the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition
Perpetual Trophy for the Performance of Irish Contemporary Choral Music, donated by The Contemporary Music Centre. (For the performance of: Regina Coeli by Rhona Clarke in Ireland's Choir of the Year Competition)
And for our wonderful conductor, Orla Flanagan, without whom none of this would have been possible:
The McCurtain and McSwiney Memorial Trophy, donated by the Cork Council of Trade Unions. (A Special Award, decided by the members of the International Jury, to a conductor in the International Competition for the performance of an imaginative and artistic programme.)
And we also got to hear many performances of rich and varied programmes by fantastic choirs, of a very high standard, from Ireland and all over the world, not to mention make some new friends.
We'd like to thank the organisers of Cork International Choral Festival (http://www.corkchoral.ie/) for putting on such a terrific event and continuing to provide a platform for the best of Irish and international choral music. Congratulations on 60 years of the highest quality choral festivals and here's to the next 60!
Our next concert will take place on Good Friday (18th of April) at 8 p.m. at the Church of Adam and Eve, Merchant's Quay. The programme consists of two Requiem settings: the hauntingly beautiful Requiem by Herbert Howells, and the well-loved Fauré Requiem. Tickets are available online at morningtonsingers.eventbrite.ie.
The Mornington Singers are holding a competition for original choral works, with entry open to all Irish composers and composers living in Ireland.
As well as wishing to promote choral music in Ireland and encourage new compositions, the choir wants to acknowledge the wonderful contribution of our musical director since 2002, Dr. Orla Flanagan, both to the Mornington Singers and to the Irish choral community in general. Prize-winning entries will therefore be dedicated to Orla.
Prizes will be awarded to the three highest placed entries and these three winning compositions will also be performed at the Mornington Singers winter concert, on the 22nd of November, 2014 (St. Cecilia's Day).
A selection of pieces entered will also be read at a workshop for singers, conductors and composers on the 18th of October, 2014.
